China Grand Canal Museum officially opened


On June 16, 2021, China Grand Canal Museum in Yangzhou, China's first comprehensive modern canal museum, which integrates cultural relics protection, scientific research exhibition and social education, officially opened.



China Grand Canal Museum, located in Yangzhou, is a comprehensive reflection of the history, the present state and the beautiful life of the Grand Canal. The exhibition area covers about 18000 m², with 11 special exhibitions.The museum welcomes the first group of visitors to experience the pavilion highlights that contemporary new media art methods combines the beauty of art and technology.



Innovative and interactive digital experience thematic exhibition areas - Boats on the Canal, Water flows lest and right, the youth yearns day and night, Minister of Waters – Lost Traces on Grand Canal were creatively planned, designed and implemented by Xenario Co., Ltd. which is led by Alexander Brandt, highlighting the millennium heritage and contemporary image of the Grand Canal. Innovative high-tech interactive equipments and digital immersive experience have brought the audience a sense of time travel.


The exhibition area – Boats on the Canal is a multimedia interactive experience exhibition with the theme of the boats on China's Grand Canal. The exhibition area is divided into two important parts.



The exhibition area adopts streamlined visiting mode. More than 70 ship models displayed along the way, together with other multimedia interactive technology such as interactive screens, AR, etc., has made the exhibition space ‘alive’, better for the audience to tell the knowledge and stories related to the evolution and the type of the boats on the Grand Canal.



Later, visitors can walk into the interior of the restored ancient boat – Shafei Craft. Looking to the outside of the boat, the visitors will find that they are moving in the dynamic picture scroll of the canal, and all members are in the ancient large-scale immersive experience theater combining the virtual and the real. Visitors can make an appointment to enter the virtual interactive experience area of Shafei Craft. Standing on the best check-in area, accompanied by a full range of immersive stereoscopic image, the visitors feel the wind and waves on the ancient canal boat, just like sailing along the canal.


Minister of Waters – Lost Traces on Grand Canal is an interactive exhibition for teenagers. When planning the escape story of the lost traces on Grand Canal, the Xenario creative team pays more attention setting educational functions. In the story line game, the audience can play as the Minister of Waters, search for clues in the scene, learn about the history and evolution of the Grand Canal, water conservancy engineering technology, etc., and operate various organ props by hand to obtain the exhibition score achievement. The exhibition area is designed to serve the museum's social education purpose in an edutainment way that teenagers enjoy.



Water flows lest and right, the youth yearns day and night is a magnificent 720° circular multimedia theatre, showing the audience the beautiful life scene along the canal with water, transport, poetry and painting as four chapters. The audience will be fully immersed in the stunning audio-visual effects brought by the Chinese style CG blockbuster of sound, light, electricity, shape and color and the immersive audio linkage interpretation.



From the planning and design to the implementation of China Grand Canal Museum, the Xenario Team has completed pioneering innovation in the design of the museum. The perfect integration of Chinese traditional culture and modern and contemporary new media art and technology, as well as high-tech solutions applied in the exhibition, has made pioneering innovation and practical implementation no longer a contradiction.
