Future IPs Gather at the World Science Fiction Convention

From October 18 to 22, the highly anticipated 81st World Science Fiction Convention was held in Chengdu, bringing together leading figures from science fiction literature, film, and design, alongside esteemed scientists, academicians, and global sci-fi organizations. At the grand opening, speeches were delivered by Liu Xiaoliu, Executive Vice Mayor of Chengdu, and Ben Yalow, Co-Chair of the convention and member of the WSFS Brand Protection Committee. Renowned sci-fi authors such as Robert J. Sawyer and Liu Cixin, as well as the The Wandering Earth film crew, gathered to mark the event.

Blockbuster Sci-Fi IPs Gather, An Unprecedented Event

The convention attracted leading sci-fi institutions worldwide, including the Korea SF Association, Japan Science Fiction Writers Club, India Science Fiction Research Association, Serbia Science Fiction Association, and Italy’s Turin Sci-Fi Museum. Domestic organizations such as Future Affairs Administration, Science Fiction World, and Tsinghua University also participated.

The themed exhibition, opening daily at 9 AM, featured sections for industry leaders, fan communities, and corporate showcases. Major sci-fi IPs like The Three-Body Universe, Science Fiction World, The Wandering Earth, AI Dream, Deep Space Exploration, and Mars One took center stage, drawing immense attention.

Emerging Sci-Fi IPs Shine, Ushering a New Era of Tech-Art Integration

One of the most popular exhibits was the “Dream” Pavilion, featuring interactive installations like the Nanosecond Clock, AI Art, and Nano Energy Concepts. Designed around hard sci-fi themes, the exhibit blended scientific principles—such as antimatter and nanomaterials—into engaging, hands-on experiences, making complex science accessible and enjoyable.

The “Dream” Pavilion quickly became a convention highlight, sparking online and offline discussions. Its lead designer, Alexander Brandt, shared insights into its concept:
“For this convention, we created two sci-fi dreams—AI Dream and Future Dream, presented in a 'Dream Box.' Visitors enter two contrasting dreamscapes: one depicting the nanosecond visions of a super-intelligent being, the other portraying a young inventor’s futuristic aspirations. We invite everyone to embark on a journey through these dreams.”

This year’s convention not only showcased established sci-fi giants but also unveiled groundbreaking new IPs, marking an exciting step toward the future of science fiction.
