Fostering imagination from an educational perspective

On March 4, 2023, scientists, artists, and experts gathered in Shanghai for the first "Hard Science Fiction" seminar. German new media artist and future experience designer Alexander Brandt (Fei Pingguo) introduced the innovative concept of "hard sci-fi" and organized a session on its educational significance. The seminar explored topics such as antimatter engines, nanobots, carbon nanotubes, gene editing, and artificial life, discussing what hard sci-fi is, its role in education, and its application in fields like physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, psychology, and medicine.

The roundtable forum focused on how immersive hard sci-fi experiences can inspire the next generation's scientific curiosity. Fei Pingguo shared his vision of creating a predictable future world for youth, encouraging them to imagine and actively participate in the birth of new technologies. Experts from institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University discussed the concept, impact, and educational applications of hard sci-fi.

Alexander Brandt, a prominent designer and professor at NYU, also serves as the chief designer for several significant projects, including the "AI Dream" immersive experience, set to debut in Shanghai Tower in the summer of 2023. This project aims to bring futuristic technologies, like antimatter engines and space elevators, to life.

The seminar aimed to inspire future innovation through the fusion of art and technology, creating an international platform for immersive exhibitions and research. Dr. Liang Zhaozheng, former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, chaired the event and gave a speech on the educational significance of hard sci-fi for future generations.
